UNIFY to Host Global Event on UN’s “World Meditation Day” 12–21–24
Both science and tradition point to the profound impact of meditation on the collective well-being of humanity. This year The United Nations announced December 21 as International Day of Meditation. In 2012 on this same date the nonprofit organization UNIFY hosted the very first globally synchronized meditation. A much-needed transformative shift in consciousness may hold the key to a more harmonious future for all of us.
The Science of Global Coherence
The Global Coherence Initiative, spearheaded by organizations like the HeartMath Institute, studies the interconnectedness of human consciousness and Earth’s natural magnetic and energetic systems. Groundbreaking research reveals that the human heart generates electromagnetic fields capable of influencing not only our emotions but also the world around us.
Meanwhile studies from the Global Consciousness Project at the Monroe Institute of Princeton University add to this understanding. They have evidence suggesting that collective meditation can measurably affect global conditions. The UNIFY organization has put these principles in practice for 12 years through their Facebook community.
Just as humans are electrical and magnetic beings, so is the planet we live on. Winfried Schumann first observed global electromagnetic resonances between the earth’s surface and the ionosphere in 1952, now called Schumann Resonance. Humans have brain and heart frequencies that overlap the earth’s magnetic field resonances. We are not only receivers of biologically relevant information in this global field. Humans contribute to shaping it through our consciousness and emotional state. -Jacob Devaney, Culture Collective
A Call to UNIFY: International Day of Meditation
Recognizing the importance of mindfulness and spiritual well-being, the United Nations recently announced the establishment of the International Day of Meditation. This initiative invites individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs to unite in shared moments of reflection and inner peace. Observed annually, the day will encourage practices like meditation, prayer, and yoga as tools to foster unity and understanding.
To raise awareness about meditation and its benefits, the General Assembly proclaimed 21 December as World Meditation Day, recalling the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. -UN Website
The UN’s focus on meditation aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development. Meditation not only nurtures mental health and personal growth but it also strengthens community bonds. When practiced collectively, it has the potential to amplify shared intentions, creating a ripple effect of healing and transformation across the planet. In an era where global challenges — climate change, social upheaval, war, and health crises — test the resilience of humanity, NOW is a great time to focus on peace and healing.
“Furthermore, Dr. Persinger also suggests that the earth’s magnetic field can act as a carrier of information between individuals and that information, rather than the intensity of the signal carrying it, is important for interaction with neural networks.” -Global Coherence Initiative
Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science
This convergence of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge science is not accidental. For centuries, Indigenous and spiritual traditions have emphasized the interconnectedness of all living things. Practices like prayer circles, drumming ceremonies, and contemplative meditation are rooted in the belief that harmony within the self extends outward to our communities and beyond.
Since 2012 Unify.org has been reviving these practices by organizing global meditations and ceremonies to strengthen the “collective field.” For 12 years the organization has been hosting these events on the equinoxes and solstice each year. The UNIFY organizers and their extended community are excited to see the UN adopt this powerful idea that they have stewarded all these years.
In many ways it signifies that the world is waking up to the importance of creating a unified global resonance. By tapping into the innate human ability to connect energetically, these globally synchronized events highlight the transformative power of mindfulness as a practical step towards addressing planetary issues. Peace starts within and ripples outward like a pebble tossed in still water.
Here’s Why Your Participation Matters
Individual actions may seem small in the face of monumental global issues, but the collective impact of synchronized intention is profound. Meditation is accessible to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status or location.
By participating in events like the UN’s International Day of Meditation or joining the UNIFY Community online, each person contributes to a wave of healing energy that transcends borders and ideologies. You can learn more of the science behind this movement by reading this article.
You are welcome to join wherever you are for the globally synchronized meditation that starts at 1:00pm PST, 3:00pm CST, 4pm EST, 9pm UTC. Take 15 minutes to meditate with people all over the world. You can also listen live to a guided meditation by visiting Unify.org.
As humanity grapples with existential challenges, these movements remind us that solutions often begin within. By cultivating peace in our own lives and aligning with the rhythms of nature we can co-create a more balanced, resilient, and compassionate world.
